Upgrade to XFree86 4.1 - it is much more efficient than 3.3.6 which you seem
to be currently using. I use a SiS 630 card and performance is much improved
(as far as a piece of junk like SiS can be improved) by this.
Compiling that, and then kde 2.1, using the freebsd ports collection, took
nearly 15 hours on this pIII/550, but the effect rocks as much as SiS can
rock (at least, it doesn't suck)
