Hello I am VenuGopal from Varanasi.

I am not a programmer but a user.

Recently I bought a Celeron 850; 128 MB RAM; 20 MB HDD; 15 Microtek Flatron monitor.

(1) I installed PCQuest Linux (RedHat 7.1) (July, 2001 issue) on one of the
partitions in full graphic mode. When I wanted to upgrade the Kernel with the one
supplied with PCQ August, 2001 I could not come out of KDE to command mode or text
mode. After logging out of KDE the computer hanged giving a black & white screen. (My
partition details - /boot 32 MB; swap 250 MB; / 1.6 GB and rest /home). Two
three times I tried but always hanged at this place.
(2) Then I again re-installed Linux using text mode with text mode as default.
When I started startx the machine logged into GNOME. But the scree size become size
it is not the size notmally what I got with Windows 98. Then when I opened GIMP the
OK, Cancel etc. buttons are not visible. I tried to resize the window but without any
success. May be I could not supply the correct settings of monitor etc.
(3) Then I re-installed Linux for 3rd time this time in graphical mode, but text
mode as default login and KDE as default in graphical mode. I changed the autodetected
values of the monitor with the one printed in the manual, and the autodetected two
button serial mouse to three button serial mouse. This Time I could not go into
graphical mode. It simply refused to accept startx.
(4) Then I re-installed Linux for 4th time this time in graphical mode, with
text mode as default login and KDE as default in graphical mode. I didnt touch any
autodetected settings.

The problem : (1) KDE is starting but I am getting spikes these spikes are not
present when I work in text mode or in Windows 98. When no programme runs the spikes
are less. But when any other window is opened or working in any programme the spikes
increase. They are maximum when I run a VCD in KDE xmms. Why these spikes are coming
and how to get rid of these?
(2) As the Linux (graphical mode) set the resolution to the maximum 1024 x . I
could not read properly the text letters are very, very small. How to change the
screen resolution? Where to tweak i.e., in Windows 98 we can change the screen
resolution from control panel or just by clicking on the desktop?
(3) When I worked in GNOME I found an utility to capture the particular area of the
screen but now, i.e., in KDE I could found the utility only for the entire screen!
Any idea where can I found the utility to capture particular area of the screen?

My opinion : I liked the KDE very much. The Kpresentation software is just superb.
Here I found what I wanted different backgrounds for different slides in a single
presentation this is not available in commercial software (Am I wrong?).

Thanks

VenuGopal
