This is NOT an xinit message. If you are entering "X" through
xdm/ kd/ gdm, then disable them by changing runlevel to 3 in
/etc/inittab ... and boot through startx.

If the problem has come with startx, then go through the startx
script, and try to locate the portions where this has arisen.

To know if the problem is in the pre-load stages, run xinit
directly from your tty. If it works, your "startx" script needs
a bit of touching up ...

This is the first time, I have heard of such a problem. Hopefully
you have some free ttys left (in case you have extended beyond
the default 6 by altering your inittab). Another unlikely thing
which can cause this sort of thing is deleting/ altering entries/
permissions or major, minor numbers in /dev/ttyN.

Can't think of anything else ....

GNU strip removes all symbols from object files. The kernel
can also be stripped to reduce size, but NOT advocated. There
is no increase in speed ... OTOH, some utilities depend on the
presence of kernel symbols to operate (ksymoops, modutils etc)
