So his X is not properly configured, and so not coming up properly.
Boot in with a bootdisk / into linux single and change id:5:initdefault to
id:3:initdefault (or whatever the /etc/inittab entry for console mode is)
Then reconfigure X. Log entries will be typically in /var/log/XFree86.0.log
