The problem you are facing pertains to dual boot. There
is a good possibility that you can use LILO itself to
do the dual boot. The LILO docs give the method. OTOH,
in case your Linux root partition is below the 1024 cyl
limits, you may be faced with the 1024-voodoo. This is
dependent upon your BIOS and LILO version.

In which case, the safest bet would be to use Windows/
DOS to boot, and load Linux through config.sys using
loadlin. You will find a comprehensive document with
step-by-step guide and sample msdos.sys, config.sys and
autoexec.bat of such a system on my homepage:

http://geocities.com/usmbish/hdi-loadlin.html OR
wget -c http://geocities.com/usmbish/hdi-loadlin.tar.gz

For immediate relief to get back to familiar waters in
DOS/ Win:

a) Boot from DOS/Win rescue floppy.
b) fdisk /mbr.
c) Reboot, and you should be in DOS/Win in case you
have not done any silly dd tricks on the MBR.
d) If this fails, I am afraid, you may have to re-
   install DOS/Win.
e) Follow the instructions of the HDI linked above.
f) There is no need to re-install Linux. Your dual
boot should be working within a few hours ;-)

man pages may be kept in different sections. Often there is a
requirement to read a specific page, rather than the default.
e.g. whatis man will reveal man (1), man (7) and man.conf (5),
and what you want is man (7); type in :- $man 7 man
