Hi all Couldnt resist adding my two bits to this rather long unresolved (?) thread. It's, by definition, the avg number of jobs waiting in a given time. Since it's often a decimal < 1, one might be logically misled into thinking of it as a fraction of CPU resources. (Theres a different entity for that viz. %CPU = CPU time / real time )
A load avg of ~1 would show optimal operation, *not* overloading by any standards. Recently read abt some site (etoys i think) running apache + mod_perl to handle ~2 million requests per hour. So a figure of 405 is very possible. Abt the figure of 99 without any processes, ur guess is as good as mine. Runaway children? Hack attempt?? System inertia??? Cheers, Vivek. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Make a great connection at Yahoo!
