Hi,
I guess this is another case of the 1024 cylinder lilo
limit.. try to boot from a floppy or use loadlin and
install the latest ver of lilo ( www.freshmeat.com
should give you the link ) . Also, i havent tried grub
or xosl whihc i think do not give the 1024 cylider
prob

PS: incase you do not know.. if your /boot is beyond
the 1024 cylinder on your disk lilo might giev
problems... 
I think you should try a diff boot manager
