i think the above cmd should have been
$ ls *.tar.gz | xargs -n 1 zxvf
I think the following would also be fine.
$ find -iname "*.tar.gz" -exec tar zxvf \{\} \;
moreover we can filter on size or other attrs (say files > 200K etc)
