Thanks for the reply. My configuration is as follows:
Acer 54e 15" monitor (which is accepted by default by Xconfigurator)
Trident AGP 3d image 975 card which is also accepted by Xconfigurator of 7.1
as pci card.
In fact, i used to get 1024x768 resolution in high color by tweaking
XF8Config file little bit. My previous XF86Config file had entry like this:

# The Colour SVGA server
Section "Screen"
Driver "svga"
# Use Device "Generic VGA" for Standard VGA 320x200x256
#Device "Generic VGA"
Device "Trident 3DImage975 (generic)"
Monitor "Acer 54e"
DefaultColorDepth 32
Subsection "Display"
Depth 32
Modes "640x480" "1024x768"
ViewPort 0 0
EndSubsection
EndSection

By adding "1024x768" right after "640x480" , I was able to get 1024x768
after starting xserver into 640x480 and then switching into 1024x768 with
ALT -CTRL-keypadPlus(+).
But this method is not working in XF86 that comes with 7.1.
