Is that debian? IIRC 2.4 kernel do not need pump.  I have been using cable 
internet for more than 3 months. Though I don't know what server is on other 
side, it has worked so far(When ever it works that is.)

Don't accept DHCP request on the interface that's connected to cable modem. 
Filter them out using iptables/ipchains. IIRC It's port 67/68 UDP.

And if possible allocate static 192.168.x.x ips to your local network. Easy to 
track who/why/how did something..

I can imagine what nasty scenario that might be...:)
