FreeBSD is a good OS but it doesn't offer a world of differences from linux.
Linux is nicelypackaged and have many goodies but freeBSD has ports.(OK They are
been ported to linux but I think they haven't been picked enough). But freeBSD
doesn't give you apt-get where you can update the binary packages. Ports are
always about source and believe me frying your machine while triying to compile
Qt+Entire KDE is not every morning tea especially given the rate of KDE
updates.(OK You can compile incrementally but by the time you recollect that you
need to update KDE, there will be more than 100MB patch for it's source..)

My advice is if you know one system and are happy with it, stick with it.
Especially on desktop. On server side linux doesn't do much bad than freeBSD.
May be a little if that's acceptable to you. Make urpmi/Mandrake,update/RHL,
apt-get/debian your friend and you won't miss much anyway...
