Just to give an Idea, I have put Nagpur Tel (1.25 lac entries, total 125 Mb)
directory at
BSNL server (PIII with 256 mb ram, SCSI disk, 2mbps pipe) with postgres.
The searching of name  / tel no/ address takes less than a second.
May be I underestimated the postgres :-)
