I would like to add a note. At least reiserfs lacks surface check while 
formatting a partition. So it's not going to tail you the badblocks. I don't 
know how you can tell resiserfs to skip certain blocks of data generated by 
badblocks etc.

Last friday I installed oracle9i on linux and I encountered I/O errors. I don't 
know why they should appear on a otherwise perfectly working disk.(OK RAM was 
kinda low. Only 256MB but that doesn't mean it should skip on some I/O. BTW 
don't neglect oracle's warning when it says it need min. 512MB RAM. Otherwise be 
prepared for a 300MB swap usage. You can imagine the speed.)

So that's it..Check with the FS you are using..
