What do you mean by dekstops? virtual desktops as in KDE or desktop 
environments?

It's different. They use DCOP are compiled piece of code and usually written in

No. Firewall can not block virii  Virii do not spread thr. network services. 
They spread thr. mails(usually). Trojan horses/secuirity exploitation attempts 
can be blocked by firewall.(Again this is subjective topic and I don't support 
fully what I stated here..)
