Seems like something ate your libc library (or just the libc.so.6
smylink).

1. Boot off your Install CD
2. When you get to the Installation screen, switch to a different VC
   (Alt-F2 should work)
3. Login as root and mount your root partitio (on /mnt) assuming there is
only one partition. If you have multiple partitions then mount the
partition that has the libc library in it (usually /)
4. cd /mnt/lib
5. Look and see if the libc* files exist. Especially look for
libc.so.6. You should find one libc.so.6.0...<something> file. The
libc.so.6 should be a symlink to this file (directly or indirectly thru
   another similar symlink)
6. If the symlink is absent, create it.
7. If the symlink is present, but the actual file is absent, then you will
have to get a copy of the file (on a floppy perhaps) and copy it.
8. sync the disks by unmounting the partition mounted on /mnt (see step 4)
9. Reboot

This should allow you to work again.
