Please check out your '/etc/resolv.conf'. Besides your 
localhost, you should have appropriate entries for the 
ISP that you connect to. Preferentially, put  both the
Primary and secondary numbers. In my case, for VSNL it
is something like this:

search localhost
domain localhost
nameserver 127.0.0.1

search nde.vsnl.net.in
domain nde.vsnl.net.in
nameserver 202.54.15.75
nameserver 202.54.1.30
