o A boot disk esentially consists of a bootable floppy which
can load the kernel and start initiating booting process
from your existing installation. "mkbootdisk" is one way
of making it. Note this is not available in some distros
like Slack. You can ofcourse make your own LILO or loadlin
  based boot disk.

o A "rescue" disk set is a stand-alone system, and can work
independently on its own from ramdisk/ floppy. This is not
easy to make. There are ready made ones like tomsrtbt and
alfalinux. Slackware boot/ root disk set is also a stand-
alone system. These are used for firefighting when you can
otherwise not boot into your system due to some major prob
or you want for some other uses besides recovery.
