Squid supports HTTP/HTTPS/FTP (possibly GOPHER/ARCHIE too) and does it
very efficiently. POP3/IMAP and SMTP can be easily handled by setting up
a local server for these features. MSN and Yahoo usually require a
persistant connection using a proprietry protocol. Yahoo has been
working through a http proxy for quite sometime. I believe even the
latest version of MSN can work through a http proxy. So I guess that
wraps up your list of protocols.

As to why there is no one application handling all of the above I guess
the obvious answer is the protocols can easily be divided into three
distinct activities - websurfing, communication and chatting. Ofcourse
there would be quite a few people who would be interested in a unified
application if you ever came up with one so keep us posted.
