The password changing tool "passwd" does not detect the presence of the
NIS environment, its PAM which does the magic using NIS RPC for the
password changing.

        passwd -> PAM -> NIS 

See docs for the "pam_unix" PAM module.

PAM makes the password changing transparent in an NIS domain for
"passwd" (or any other app which goes thru PAM)

BTW: In case you plan to deploy NIS in your network, i strongly recommend
against NIS. Use LDAP for providing single point authentication instead.
LDAP is secure, robust and highly scalable.
