This is the Squid SMB auth module right?

The SMB protocol either uses broadcasts to locate a domain controller or
it can use WINS.

smb_auth does not support WINS - it uses broadcast to locate the
controller which might take time to resolve. In order to speed up domain
controller resolutions and to provide flexibility, you should use the -U
switch and specify the IP address of your SMB auth server so that the
broadcast can be avoided. This usually speeds up the auth process a
lot and its usage is recommended.

The "-U <IP>" need not be the IP of the domain controller. For example,
if you want to use the BDC for auth purposes, "smb_auth -W MYDOMAIN -U
<IP_OF_BDC>" will work too. I can substitute "-U" with the IP of a
Samba member server and it still works.
