startkde is merely a shell script which does the initial-
isations necessary for KDE and  execs  a lot of programs.
Have a good look at it.

You can write  a similar thing for gnome as well, call it
"startgnome" if you so desire.

The default method of starting a window manager under "X"
is through the script 'startx'. All that is needed is the
name of the window manager in the last line of ~/.xinitrc
file, and typing startx will get you to your favoured WM.

I do not have gnome installed.
