Well there is a expression matching filter is pegasus which allows me to match 
a regexp in header and/or body. Similarly there is one 'Any header' filter in 
kmail.

Problem is if it shows mailing list information a click away, why can't it have 
a built in rule to filter it?

It's not that it can't be done. It's more about having sensible defaults.(OK 
enough cribbing. Pegasus is hell better than netscape. But that's why I crib. I 
wouldn't expect netscape/outlook to get any better..;-))
