The routing in kernel 2.2 and above has improved remarkably. According to advance-routing-howto, the linux beats most of the commercial router, feature and speed wise too.
For example cisco is selling cache server based on PIII (with one SCSI) for around 12 lacs, and cache server based on sever class machine +linux+squid would cost around 2 lacs.
