Actually if important mount points like /var,/home and /usr are mounted on 
separate partitions then you can do away with small / like say 300MB. 

So one way is to allocate separate partitions to different mount points. It 
varies with need. For a home machine, keeping /usr on separate partition would 
do. Whereas on a mail server you need a biiig /var.

Otherwise follow the usual procedure.. backup-install-restore..
