Maybe with his security settings, redhat 7.2 does what freebsd does, and
allows only members of a certain group (say wheel) to su root?

By default, most distros are configured to display the mailbox
status on login. To disable this feature (eg. for a standalone
box) edit /etc/login.defs and change MAIL_CHECK_ENAB to "no".
