Call it a problem or a mistake, always try and follow this rule of thumb
or the middle finger or whatever. :D

Rule is to refrain from using tarballs on a linux installation which
supports some form of a package management system. This does nothing but
breaks things when you try to make any changes like upgrading the
software installed using a tarball.

See if you can get down the source RPM's. Modify the SPEC file,
recompile the source RPM's, make your own binary rpm using rpm -bb and
install these RPM's.

I cant think of a safer way to do this.
