I know this sounds silly but how many different CDs did you try ? btw,
they aren't audio CDs are they ?

Have you tried fiddling with dma for this drive ?

Try changing the cdrom cable.

I used to get this error when I (unsuccessfully) tried multisession
cdwriting, heh heh, your /var/log/messages should be chock a block with
these messages repeated hundreds of times. I get this bread failed error
when a cd that I have just written remains in the cdwriter. They stop as
soon as I eject the cd from the cdwriter.
