Wouldn't it be easier to just shift your HDD from an i586 box to an i686
box??  ;-)

It'll work fine.. a little config will be needed after booting

Just ensure that the hard disk with linux on it remains in the same
position as it was when linux was installed... (normally hda) ... I had a
real heart stopping moment... when I tried booting into a disk that had
fstab entries that pointed to another position.. and saw it attempting to
mount the / partition of the other hard disk as *swap* !!

And remmeber to boot into the system using the stock kernel that shipped
with the distro.. or atleast a kernel that has all the drivers for the new
hardware (mobo/sound/video/network etc)
