Immediate solution: as root do a ps -ae | less, and kill
all the processes with 'kill <process-id-no>'. Memory is
going to be freed till next reboot at least.

These would be in /etc/rc.d/. These are very much distro
specific, so cannot give a specific reply. Just  go thr-
out the rc files there and comment out the sections that
you want to exclude ...
