That's ctrl+alt+backspace to kill X server.

Back to your main query. S3 is pretty well supported card, including most of 
it's variants.(And it's very good desktop card IMO). 

So chances are that you haven't configured your monitor very properly. Put 
proper hsync/fsync ranges in /etc/X11/XF86Config if you are configuring at as 
generic monitor... I repeat, put ranges.. 

You can get them from monitor manual.

To configure X easily, as root, run setup and choose X configuration. I believe 
it's last option in RedHat. In mandrake it has more than a dozen things you can 
configure thr. setup.
