I do not get the idea what you mean by this, you configured a static IP
address on this machine ?? Did it not exist earlier ? or did u not have a
static IP address earlier. Well static IP address is give by INTERNIC you
cannot just add some entry to it and what you have entered is a INTRANET IP
address and not a static IP address.

You remove the entries from the /etc/hosts file and try to ping your Windows
m/c and see how much time it takes and what is the transmission loss, if the
time taken is more then you have to configure a DNS server for your n/w.

You cannot FTP or telnet to a Windows m/c unless you have installed IIS on
the Windows m/c

By default you can ftp or telnet to a Unix m/c. Try to login to the Linux
m/c with a normal user account and not root.
