Yes you can

Anything you like.  If you are (like my sister @ bits is) just keeping this
comp in your room for coding, listening to music etc, then use any distro
that you feel you like better than other distros ... 

If you dont want to be spoonfed try (say) debian or slackware ;)

For that you _have_ to be connected to the 'net ... there's ari-yahoo, for
example.

BTW, you might find that you need to be root on your system to install a
messenger client ... (try ./configure --prefix=/your/home/directory/).  You
might also find that your sysadmin might not be too amused by your installing
a messenger client (which was my sister's reaction when I recommended this to
her ...) ;)

If you DO NOT want exim to update your Sender Address then add
specific user names in /etc/exim.conf as "trusted_users". This
will ensure the "From:" address to be exactly the same as what
was used in your e-mail client while composing message.
