No, the 8Gb limit is applicable only for bootloaders. Actually, it is the
BIOS that is the limitation because the bootloaders use the BIOS to get
the first few pieces of the the kernel. Booting off a bootdisk should be a
breeze. Once Linux boots, the BIOS is redundant.

Modern BIOSes do not have the 8Gb limit anymore. Meaning that if your
machine is relatively new (was bought within the last year or so) then you
might not have the limitations. If you do face problems booting a kernel
that is beyond the 8Gb point, then you might want to 

1. upgrade the BIOS (assuming there is a later version that fixes the
problem
2. repartition to locate the boot partition within the 8Gb limit
3. use a boot disk (as you intended)

Options 1 and 2 might be risky because of the potential loss of data
(options 2) or loss of the system (Option 1 - BIOS upgrade failing)
