Just tested it over here. The smb_auth squid authenticator is _not_
broken in RHL 7.2 and Debian Unstable. I am pretty sure that it was not
broken in 7.1 and in 7.0, as i have been using smb_auth on it. Don't have
a 7.0/1 boxes anymore to confirm it though.

RHL 7.2 running squid-2.4.STABLE1-5

$ cat /etc/redhat-release
Red Hat Linux release 7.2 (Enigma)

$ rpm -q squid
squid-2.4.STABLE1-5

$ /usr/lib/squid/smb_auth -W XXXXXX -I 192.168.1.1
shanu XXXXXXX
OK

Debian Unstable running Squid 2.4.3-2

$ cat /etc/debian_version
3.0

$ dpkg -l squid
[..]
ii squid 2.4.3-2 Internet Object Cache (WWW proxy
cache)

$ /usr/lib/squid/smb_auth -W XXXXXXX -I 192.168.1.1
shanu XXXXXXX
OK
