It doesn't say anywhere on that page that gcc 2.96 is broken or buggy. It just says its a development version. In any case, you also should read http://www.bero.org/gcc296.html The OP's problem is because of incompatible RPM versions. Raju Mathur had written a howto on how to convert from RPM v3 to RPM v4.
