In X, there is kde media player. I saw a motif one but not sure it was CD 
player or mp3 player..

Or some console based players like gamp/mpg123. I got a curses based player 
working(Forgot the name) but not as great as xmms..

I just browsed 3 pages on freshmeat index of mp3 players. There are 16 in 
them.. SO you can search if you are not satisfied already..
