I suggest mandrake for desktop. Secondly if you configure ldap on application 
server and do central authentication, you can have single logon where user can 
run apps locally as well as from application server. This will allow proper use 
of resources. Rather than having 128MB RAM on each machine and leave half of it 
unused, you can put a gig on server and have it 80% used.. And staroffice will 
be especially faster on such a machine due to caching..

You can create links/network mounts where users mail will be on individual 
machines in ~ but all the files will be centrally placed. etc.etc..

Well, it's a personal preferance but I would suggest KDE. It's hell easy to use 
and though it looks like windows, it's much more than that in all senses.

And I never thought KDE will lose on issue of 'Looks' against GNOME.. Ever 
tried some themes?..;-)
