These are the problems I envisage with your box.

a) The single disk debian (potato) in Jun or Jul Chip last
   year, has just about basic installs, and a few apps.You
   need to get at least the 3 CD set for a start. It  will
   be some time before you can debianise a developers tar-
   ball for your box.
   
b) Your graphic card is not supported by kernel  2.2.14 on
   the chip CD. The rest of your h/w is swinging.
   
c) I think you may be able to run non-gui  apps under this
   kernel. Do a basic install, with just about the ability
   to connect to the net. Change apt sources to woody  and
   the first thing would be to get a  2.4.xx  kernel  from
   debian, and configure your graphic card. Then do a dist 
   upgrade and switch totally to the newer woody. You need 
   to read the docs for apt-get to understand this para ..
   
Not much help, but some pointer anyway ...
