I have an alias to startx

alias x="exec startx -- -bpp 32 &> .X.log"

in my .profile

Then all I need to do is type 'x' and I am ready!

All screen output goes to .X.log if I ever need to look at it.

And I have not been able to succesfully get to the command prompt on the
tty I started X on. Stopping it doesn't do a thing. Killing X drops me
back to the login prompt.

This can be a pain if you keep starting and stopping X often, but I don't
so it is convenient and a lot safer too IMHO.
