Hopefully, Samba will be able to replace NFS soon. UNIX extensions have been added to the CIFS protocol in Samba (code donated by HP and already being used in HP's CIFS (HP CIFS/9000?) appliances which is based on Samba). The client side issues are being worked on ATM. The server side is complete.
