This is done automatically now during make install. codecs.conf is copied
in the mplayer global directory.

Not an uphill task till you follow all the instructions step by step. Don't
neglect any message which comes during ./configure or make install. They
tell you something.
You will see the results once you succeed.

If you download the codecs from mplayer site you will see a message there
that these are not windows codecs and will not work on windows. In the
initial stages of mplayer development they were using windows dll files now
they have got their own.
