How true, but there are several others like  ASAP which have come
about with common usage. SOS for example ... 

Incidentally, like several LOSTs, this was put up after some folk
on this list itself found it difficult to understand some  of the
abbreviations on postings a few months ago ...

Modern  telnets  pass  your TERM environment variable from the 
local side to the remote one. There can be problems if  remote 
terminfo or termcap entry for your type is not compatible with 
yours, and can usually be avoided by explicitly exporting:
