sorry for being too hasty with my query.
I fixed the problem.

What did was this:
As normal user, I created a directory and used 'ls -l'
and found that the other directories were not executable
while this one was. So I turned all the directories
in my home directory executable and lo! My problem was
solved.
Dunno why directories need to be executable.
