THe refresh rate on the mode line may be overdriving the monitor. Try
lowering the refresh rate or use a modeline with a lower refresh rate.

Also, use xvidtune to change the horizontal and vertical timings of the
video mode. Sometimes a combination of the refresh and timings makes the
monitor cry out :)

Another way to probably make the whine go away is to reduce the
VSync/HSync refresh freqeuncy slightly to make X choose a lower refresh 
rate (one that is within the monitor's capabilities)...
