Thanks to all who replied to my query.
I have decided to go for Woody (7CD set)

Yes. I used ntsysv to reduce the number of daemons to 6, reduced
the number of tty login consoles to 2, and switched to fluxbox & ROX
and even Mandrake 8.1 is flying. But somehow, I think Mandrake, Red
Hat, etc. have a mind of their own and I am not yet fully confident
changing things in the rc scripts. (I don't intent to hurt anyone)

I was talking of the number of pre-compiled software that come
with Slakware. I like to play with various software, otherwise,
any single CD Linux distro comes with enough software for my
`real' requirements.

I have never installed Debian before. I was talking from my
experiences with Mandrake and Red Hat installation which, I think
use some script (perhaps Python based) for installation, and this
sometimes gives me "Installation died unexpectedly" on some
'low-on-resources' systems.
(I then go and install Slackware there :-)

Your 2ps have always been the most helpful for newbies like me.
Thanks.
