I used ntsysv to reduce the number of daemons to 6, reduced the number of tty login consoles to 2, and switched to fluxbox & ROX and even Mandrake 8.1 is flying. But somehow, I think Mandrake, Red Hat, etc. have a mind of their own and I am not yet fully confident changing things in the rc scripts. I have never installed Debian before. I was talking from my experiences with Mandrake and Red Hat installation which, I think use some script (perhaps Python based) for installation, and this sometimes gives me "Installation died unexpectedly" on some 'low-on-resources' systems. (I then go and install Slackware there :-) >Just my 2p Your 2ps have always been the most helpful for newbies like me.
