There is a free linux client of f-prot. The updates are also free. If you
want to scan on a mailserver than try mailscanner & f-prot combination. It
works quite well.

To back up, or to copy between filesystem/ directory with out
loosing any info on the files/dirs do:
$(tar cvf - /backup-path) | ( cd /where-to-copy; tar xvf - )
This is also suitable for backups on tapes.
