This is a function of the browser and not Windows per se. If
you ever used lynx for M$, you'd see  nothing is  written to
C:\temp

In Linux too the temporary files are kept in the cache of the
respective browsers (where applicable). For netscape they are
kept under ~/.netscape/cache, for opera  ~/.opera/cache4  (or
similar).

X-Windows will not start on booting unless you set it to. This
needs special programs like xdm/ gdm/ kdm, and  "/etc/inittab"
file set for runlevel 5 ... viz:

# Default runlevel. (Do not set to 0 or 6)
id:5:initdefault:

In any case, you can always go into X with "startx" command.
