Is your installation beyond the 1024 cylinder limit ? If yes,
just make a boot disk and boot through this, since  you  need
it only for a short while ...

Perhaps it would be easier to install the old  version of PG
or compile it from source on the new  platform  for recovery 
purposes, and remove it once the dumps are taken.

Sub : How to make a Loadlin bootdisk                 LOST #119

This is the simplest way making your own boot disk.  Totally a 
DOS prompt job. In DOS [1] "format a: /s/v" [2] Copy two files
your kernel (usually vmlinuz) and "loadlin.exe" to it, [3] and  
make a one-line config.sys to point to your / device and boot:
e.g. "shell=a:\loadlin.exe a:\vmlinuz root=/dev/hda2 ro"
