Thanks Kingsly, and others. You hit the head on the nail..... no I mean the
other way round ;-)

We've a local network made up of about 15 machines and this machine
192.168.0.1
was being used as the internet gateway, so I mistakenly gave its address as
the gateway
on all machines (including itself!). I removed it like you said and the
whole problem was solved.
