You do not need root privileges to to run ymessenger. It is a single binary which you may place anywhere in your path. (e.g /usr/local/bin). If you have downloaded the rpm, su to root (viz 'su' and give root password on prompt) and run 'rpm -i rpmfilename.rpm'. It will install at the correct place for RH/ SuSE/ MDK.
